With his self titled 2011 debut album, John David Kent established in himself as a force in the Texas scene. Today his sophomore album "Before the Sun Comes Up" hits stores and iTunes. Kent stopped last summer to preview a few tracks off the new album with us, seems like a good time to revisit that.

In the '90s, as a teen, Kent started an alt-rock band with Ben Kweller called Radish, the Texas boys had world wide success, and a Top 40 single in Europe. The guys made their rounds on the late night American television shows, even went on our world tour: Europe, Japan and Australia. Kweller has since gone on to a successful solo career, with John playing drums on his first two solo albums.

"That's the cool thing about music," says Kent, "You grow up playing as a kid just so you can hang out with your buddies, you never think it's gonna take you around the world and then bring you right back home."

"Free to Drive"

Track nine off Before the Sun Comes Up is extremely autobiographical for Kent. "The theme of the album for me is kind of an end of innocence and coming of age... the feeling of being in high school and getting your keys and everything that comes with being able to drive... and that's what this song is specifically about." Give it a listen.

"Country Twang"

Kent expressed hesitation at the thought of it being a prospective radio single. Not because it's not worthy, he's worried it's "a lil too different," I couldn't disagree more. I really like this one. In fact if you've been streaming our online radio station, you'll recognize it. I definitely added it to our play list, without official permission. Check it out.

"Until We Turn Around"

Let's close it out with his current radio single, "Until We Turn Around," enjoy.

Another strong song off the album is "A Little Less Lonely." I enjoyed it when it's writer Jeff Allen released it, and Kent's take on it is refreshing.
