When Sam Riggs and the Night released the video for “When the Lights Go Out,” last summer, it caused some pretty big waves. Who was this young, unknown band from Texas landing a No. 1 video on CMT Pure?

Well, now we all know the answer. His last single Angola’s Lament spent about nine months on the Texas charts, and due to it’s long, steady and deliberate climb will likely be one of the biggest songs of the 2014.

Of “When the Lights Go Out,” Riggs says:

I was going through a tough time in my life when I wrote this song. “That night I picked up a pen and had an idea in my head of this song, about an unbreakable love with an underlying violence in the storyline…  A big thunder storm rolled in that night – the lighting hit the power transformer at the end of my street and the lights went out. It was so loud the hair stood up on the back of my neck, but the words finally came to me.

His current single Hold On, Let Go is out the radio now, and this Wednesday (August 20) Riggs is my musical guest for Radio Texas, LIVE! at Cowboys in Tyler.
