More Presidents Have Come From Texas Than You Realize
Texas is a vast state with lots of political figures, but we've had fewer U.S. presidents come from the state than some would think.
While a ton of presidents haven't come from Texas, we have still produced a decent amount, considering only 21 states have produced a president. Some of which can only claim one.
How many presidents has Texas had?
If you go by where they were born, then Texas has only had two residents become president.
One was the 34th President Dwight D. Eisenhower, who was born in Denison, Texas. While we can claim him as a Texan by birth, Eisenhower was primarily brought up in Abilene, Kansas. He served as president from 1953 - 1961.
The second was the 36th President Lyndon B. Johnson, born in central, Texas, not far from Johnson City -- a place his family helped establish. He was running and Vice President to John F. Kennedy. After Kennedy's assassination in 1963, Johnson was sworn in as president. In all, he served as president from 1963 - 1969.
Only two presidents are officially listed as Texans, but I think there are more
You'll probably get different answers from different people if you ask how many presidents are from Texas. I would consider these two men to be Texas presidents as well, but they weren't born here.
George H. W. Bush, the 41st President, was born in Milton, Massachusetts. However, he spent a large portion of his life in Texas, first working in the oil industry before becoming prominent in Texas politics. He served as president from 1989 - 1993.
George W. Bush, the 43rd president, was born in New Hope, Connecticut. But he could also be considered a Texan. While he was born elsewhere, he lived in Midland, Texas while growing up. He went off for a while but ultimately came back to Midland to work in the oil industry before eventually becoming governor of Texas. He was president from 2001 - 2009.
All in all, I think it's fair to say these two men are Texans by heart. So really, you could argue Texas is home to four U.S. presidents rather than two -- bringing us up to half the number of the state with the most presidents, Virginia (8).
