Natalie Rhea Acoustic Sessions: Sam Riggs ‘Dark As A Dungeon’
"Dark as a Dungeon" is an extremely heartfelt song written by singer/songwriter Merle Travis in the early 1940s. It is a lament about the danger, labor and grind of being a coal miner. It was made famous by Johnny Cash when he recorded it in 1968.
Sam Riggs' mama sang this lament to him growing up, and he has continued this tradition with even greater vigor.
