Texas Man Stole $300K From School District… To Meet Mickey Mouse?
A Texas Man Is Getting Ready To Go To Federal Prison After Spending A Lot Of Time At "The Happiest Place On Earth".
We've seen stories where criminals usually buy selfish and expensive things with money that stolen like cars, jewelry, boats, houses, and clothes.
But the story we're about to tell involved a man who embezzled thousands from an East Texas school district only to blow it on a certain cartoon mouse and his empire.
38-year-old Brandon Delane Looney Was The Former Business Manager Of Trinidad ISD.
In federal court on Thursday, prosecutors said that Looney, who is originally from Orange, TX, embezzled more than $300,000 between 2017 and 2023 during his tenure at Trinidad ISD in Henderson County.
It's a federal crime to take money from an organization that receives more than $10,000 in federal funds annually so the FBI’s Tyler Field Office investigated the case with help from the Tyler Police Department and the Trinidad ISD.
Investigators also found he used the money to pay for trips to Walt Disney World and spending sprees at the Disney Store.
Knowing that he was in big trouble, Looney plead guilty to theft from a program receiving federal funds. He faces up to 10 years in federal prison and will have to pay restitution to Trinidad ISD for the funds he stole. Looney may also have to pay a fine.
Prior to his guilty plea, Looney liquidated his assets and preserved them for restitution by working with the Financial Litigation Unit of the U.S. Attorney’s Office. He sold his house in Vidor and other assets to preserve over $200,000 for Trinidad ISD.
A sentencing hearing will be scheduled at a later date.
Even if he gets a light sentence, Looney will still have to pay up after he gets out of jail. The U.S. Attorney's Office added that the full restitution judgment will be collectible for 20 years after the termination of Looney’s incarceration.
Hope all the Disney swag and fun was worth going to federal prison over.
