The Biggest U.S. Shoe Retailer Now Closing 400 Stores, How is Texas Affected?
In 2024, across Texas and the U.S., we saw the end of several major chains as the continued shift in online shopping has almost put a nail in the coffin of "big box stores".
Here we are just a few weeks into 2025, and we've already learned that retailers including Advance Auto Parts, Big Lots, and Kohl's all plan to close hundreds of locations.
We've also gotten word that major chain restaurants like Applebee's and T.G.I. Friday's shuttering stores. And now another massive retailer is hitting the "reset" button.
Foot Locker Plans To Close 400 Locations.
Foot Locker, the nation's largest footwear chain, closed down dozens of locations last year and they recently announced plans to continue to close stores for the next 23 months, eventually shuttering 400 locations that are underperforming.
While the closures mean Foot Locker's global store count will decrease by 10%, leaving them with 2,400 locations worldwide, company executives called the strategy a "reset" that comes after their total sales dropped.
Along with 275 Foot Locker stores, the closures will include 125 Champs Sports, which the company also owns.
If you got FLX Cash, better use it...anyway. It's not the absolute end of Foot Locker and Champs overall. They will be introducing more "experiential" store concepts that they hope are attractive to younger shoppers.
Especially when you consider the wait teens and others would have to wait outside of malls for the latest "drops" only to be disappointed to find that their local store doesn't have it which also explains why most young people shop directly online.
Among the new strategies is one that focuses on categories of different types of sneaker shoppers. Those groups, which were each created by Foot Locker, include:
- "athletes," who are seeking high-performance sneakers,
- "sneaker mavens," who represent themselves through their shoes,
- "fashion-forward expressionists," who want their sneakers to make them look and feel cool,
- plus other groups of shoppers who want quality and comfort in their shoes, and deal hunters.
How Many Texas Locations Will Be Affected?
The closures will be split between stores at smaller regional malls and larger but lower-performing malls. That means if your mall in Texas has one or both of these stores, they could be on the chopping block.
When you consider that malls across the country are either closing or being sold off, chances are high that your town will be losing its store. But really, when was the last time you've been inside a Foot Locker or Champs?
