Why The State Fair Of Texas Disqualified A Teen’s Unique Dress
The State Fair Of Texas is coming y'all! There will be lots of award-winning fair food to enjoy, adrenaline-pumping rides to ride, carnival games to play to win prizes, live music to enjoy, lots of vendor exhibits to see, livestock to see and be judged along with hundreds of creations on display in the many fair contests.
Preparations are underway for the fair's opening day, Friday, September 27th. Texans are submitting their homemade or handmade creations in the many competitions at the State Fair of Texas.
However, one Texas teen's art creation was recently disqualified from an art competition by state fair officials before the competition could get underway.
Sixteen-year-old Kaylee Rodgers from Collin County created a dress out of recycled playing cards that her mom brought home from work. She was entering the dress that she created in the arts and crafts competition. Days before the judging she was contacted by fair officials letting her know her creation was being disqualified.
Kaylee created the unique dress using 40 decks of cards in about 60 hours. She was gluing, stapling, sewing, and taping the cards into just the right place with just the right pattern.
Officials disqualified her dress because of its sheer size. It was simply too big for the competition. While disappointed in the decision, Kaylee accepts it and tells NBCDFW,
It was a fair disqualification because I wouldn't want to enter a competition, and someone bend the rules and win when I followed all the rules. So, I definitely think it’s a fair disqualification."
Kaylee has a positive attitude toward the situation and the judges' decision. As a result, she has had offers from casinos and museums about acquiring her dress and putting it on display.
CBS News Texas says Kaylee's dress will be seen at the fair after all. Organizers for the Go Texan Pavilion have offered to showcase her dress during the entire run of the State Fair of Texas this year.
