Paul Cauthen Takes Us to Church with New Album ‘My Gospel’
Beginning this month Paul Cauthen will be joining Elle King on tour in support of his debut solo album, My Gospel. Rolling Stone describes Cauthen as “A triple-barreled blast of Texas country, soul and holy-roller rockabilly.”
Texas Monthly says: "this promising, outlaw-style solo debut makes the Tyler native sound like the Highwaymen all rolled into one: he’s got Willie’s phrasing, Johnny’s haggard quiver, Kristofferson’s knack for storytelling, and Waylon’s baritone. Though none of them could have hit the high notes that Cauthen nails with ease."
Cauthen tells PopMatters,“My Gospel is a reiteration of my grandfather’s lessons told to me when I was young. He and his twin brother led their gospel church—my grandad was the song leader and his brother was the preacher. My Gospel is my truth. It’s my plea. It’s me holding the torch my grandfather passed to me.”
From Rolling Stone: My Gospel, steers clear of the pop (and pap) of modern-day Nashville. Produced by Beau Bedford, the album unleashes the full fury of Cauthen's voice, a barking, booming baritone developed during his childhood days as a choir member at the Church of Christ. There's plenty of gospel here, but these songs also worship at the altar of Muscle Shoals soul and groove-heavy country, packed with all the drive and drama of Roy Orbison's work.
