From a post to Earle’s official Instagram: “It is with tremendous sadness that we inform you of the passing of our son, husband, father and friend Justin. So many of you have relied on his music and lyrics over the years and we hope that his music will continue to guide you on your journeys. You will be missed dearly Justin”

Justin Townes was named after his father’s friend, songwriter Townes Van Zandt.

In 2009, Earle took home Emerging Act of the Year at the Americana Honors & Awards, he won Song of the Year honors in 2011 with “Harlem River Blues.” He was also nominated for Artist of the Year in 2012.

Earle's latest album, The Saint of Lost Causes, came out in 2019, he described the project to The Boot as "a social commentary -- real old-school, [Bruce] Springsteen-style, but spread across America, not just Jersey."

Earle married his wife, Jenn Marie, in 2013. In June of 2017, the couple welcomed their daughter, Etta St. James.

The cause of death was not given.
